Altarpiece combines two ceremonial objects: the reliquary and the devotional image. The saints are caged and covered with a protective coating of precious material like a relic, yet they are also displayed to the viewer as  in an altarpiece. Having to peer through the screen alludes to the voyeuristic aspect of nudes in religious art.
