My work has always revolved around portrayals of the feminine, especially as framed in an arcane mythological/religious setting. Knowledge begets history, then myths. These fairy stories become displaced in time, being retold and adapted for new audiences and new circumstances. This piece pulls inspiration from multiple sources including; the French fairytale Toads and Diamonds, 16th and 17th century concepts of witchcraft and the historical connection between pearls, purity and virginity. For me, this distillation of elements from different histories and mythologies gives a sense of the art being outside of time while still confronting the present. It was created along with several other pieces for the show Doomslayers, a queer defiance against the current political and social climate.
